Dartmouth Museum

Dartmouth Museum dates back to 1640 and is a small and very interesting Museum in one of the old Merchants House's in the town. It has many marine and local artefacts, amongst which is a fascinating collection of ships in bottles. In addition there is a wide range of old photo's of the local area.

Dartmouth Castle

Dartmouth Castle is among a pair of forts, the extra being Kingswear Castle that safeguards the entrance of the Dart Estuary. The castle encompasses two towers, one in a circle and one quadrangle and the walls divisions which is built on a rock-strewn cape and is extremely close to the sea front. The castle was built in the 14 century but had been considerably reconstructed in the late 15 century when it was recreated particularly to lodge guns by King Henry VIII, the castle was an operational fort until the 19th century.

The South Devon Steam Railway

The South Devon Steam Railway is a registered Charity which operates a Standard Gauge Railway between Buckfastleigh and Totnes in South Devon, England beside the fast flowing river Dart. The line was built by the South Devon Railway and first opened on 1st May 1872. It was taken over by the Great Western Railway in 1876. The line closed to all traffic on 7th September 1962 and was re-opened as a preserved steam line on 5th April 1969.

The South Devon Railway Trust took over the running of the line on 1st January 1991. There are a number of steam locomotives and privately owned diesels, together with some historic rolling stock. Well worth a visit, this popular attraction organises a number of events, from "Thomas the Tank Engine" days, to "Steam Extravaganza's, "Santa by Steam" "Carols down the line" and more. Bayard's Cove Fort

The Fort is a single storey fortress built to protect the entrance of the harbour and was built by Henry VIII with the country's other defences of coastal areas. People from all walks of life like to visit Bayard's Cove Fort and enjoy it's scenic beauty, you can view the full fort from the river Dart, the fort has a very majestic look and feel to it. The best option would be to hire a motorboat and explore the coastline of the River dart and spend time at the Bayard's Cove Fort.
