Wildlife Artist Kim Thompson and the inspiration of the South Hams

Wildlife artist Kim Thompson is a regular visitor to the South Hams area where she finds inspiration for her work in the beautiful countryside and coastline found in this part of the country. Walks with binoculars, camera and sketchpads on the South West coast path and tracks to Dittisham, Greenways and Coleton Fishacre are guaranteed to provide reference material for these places are great habitats for UK wildlife.

Working primarily in acrylics, pencil and oils, Kim’s artwork is characterised by a close attention to detail and realism. She works as both a wildlife artist and illustrator having trained at Dyfed College of Art, West Wales on a specialist wildlife illustration course.

Painting and drawing have always been a part of her life and a love of the natural world found her combining the two in a career which has brought her projects for clients around the world. From book and magazine illustrations in the UK, USA and Europe to museum installations in Abu Dhabi and logo designs in Africa her work encompasses a huge variety of creatures and habitats.

Kim also paints for exhibitions and private commission and her original paintings have been sold at Christie’s Wildlife Art auctions and are published by Rosenstiels, a major U.K based fine art publisher. She is also a regular participant in the Artist in Residence program at Nature in Art, Gloucester, a unique museum and gallery dedicated to promoting wildlife art and artists and she exhibits with the Society of Women Artists and the Society of Equestrian Artists in London where she has received several awards.

Her work has been bought by HRH Princess Michael of Kent and sold to raise funds for wildlife projects both in the UK and in Africa. Kim also regularly travels to Botswana to encourage the development of the arts amongst children in rural communities as part of a wildlife conservation initiative.

Kim regularly stays in Dartmouth during visits to paint and work on new ideas for her canvases and other projects and this area will continue to be a favourite destination and source of ideas for paintings.
